Filtered vs Foam Earplugs: What to Check Before Buying
Filtered earplugs and foam earplugs can both reduce sound, but their design and fit differ. A filter is designed around a particular listening experience; formable foam expands inside the ear canal. Neither category automatically provides the right protection for every person or situation.
Compare the design, fit and care routine, then decide whether FREQOFF's reusable format suits your next rehearsal or gig.

How do the designs differ?
Formable foam
Foam earplugs are compressed before insertion and expand to follow the ear canal. Follow the particular product's instructions for fitting and replacement. Do not assume that every foam earplug has the same rating or is intended for repeated use.
Filtered earplugs
Filtered designs include an acoustic filter. Music-oriented models aim to reduce sound while retaining a more balanced listening experience. NIOSH identifies flat-attenuation protectors as an option when sound fidelity matters.
FREQOFF uses a passive high-fidelity acoustic filter, with no batteries or charging. Its stated rating is 24 dB SNR when used as directed. It does not produce silence, and the sound you hear will change.
Fit is a separate decision from filter type
A product category cannot tell you whether a specific pair fits your ears. FREQOFF is a pre-shaped, one-size product. Black Purple, Black White, Chrome Purple, Chrome Black, Gold Black and Pink White are colour combinations, not size choices.
If a pair slips out or causes discomfort, resolve that before relying on it in loud sound. If you already struggle with one-size earplugs, contact FREQOFF about fit before buying. See the fit and sizing details.
NIOSH emphasizes appropriate selection, comfortable fit and consistent use, and describes individual fit testing as a way to assess the protection someone actually receives. Read its hearing-protection guidance. Its guidance covers workplace protection and does not establish a safe concert duration for a particular pair.
Compare care and repeat use
For foam: check whether the exact model is disposable or reusable, and follow its care and replacement instructions.
For FREQOFF: the silicone earplugs are reusable and washable. Follow the supplied cleaning instructions, let them dry fully and keep them in the included case. Check condition before each use.
Think about your routine as well as the purchase. Will you keep a pair with your gig bag? Have somewhere to store it between shows? Remember to clean it before the next rehearsal? Those questions help you choose a product you can use consistently.
When is FREQOFF worth considering?
Consider FREQOFF if you want a reusable, music-focused filtered pair, are comfortable with its one-size format and want a carry case included. The retail price is €35 per pair. All finishes share the same stated filter and attenuation rating.
Before committing, check fit, the returns policy and delivery details. Earplugs ship from Cyprus; estimated delivery is 5–15 business days.

Common comparison questions
Do filtered earplugs always protect more than foam?
No. Compare the specific products, their stated ratings, fitting instructions and intended use. Category labels alone do not establish which gives you more protection.
Does a higher price prove better protection?
No. Price can reflect design, materials, case, finish or reusability. It does not verify the attenuation an individual wearer receives.
Does a different FREQOFF colour change the sound rating?
No. Choose a finish for its appearance. The six colour combinations share the same stated 24 dB SNR rating and high-fidelity filter.
